January 1

Happy New Year! It’s a nice morning for a walk.

January 1

Jan notices that Moxie is sitting on top of the printer, with the printer cover open. He points this out to Bree, who quietly slides over to the printer and presses the Copy button. Moxie is entertained by the line of light that moves back and forth beneath him. A printout emerges.

Jan: “I think that’s called a cat scan.”

January 6

Angela and Jan head to Crystal Mountain for the first skiing of the season. Angela meets up with Josie and Anna, moms of kids that attended the same K–8 school as our kids, and Jan joins them for the morning. At lunchtime, they’re joined by Jan’s friend Chris, and the 5 of us eat at the mountaintop restaurant. Jan and Chris head off to ski on their own, while Angela skis a bit more before heading to Buckley for work and a party.

January 12

Today happens to be Evrim’s birthday, so we celebrate it with her over dinner. Angela makes a Turkish/Greek souvlaki and a baklava. Turkish culture doesn’t make a big deal about birthdays, but we add a candle to Evrim’s dessert and sing “Happy Birthday” anyway!

January 14

It’s sunny today, so Jan, Angela, Liya, and Evrim make a short trip to Winslow on Bainbridge Island. Many other people have apparently decided to take advantage of the sun, so it’s unclear whether our car will make it onto the next ferry. The decision is made to have Angela, Liya, and Evrim walk on so that they can at least get to Winslow earlier; Jan can follow in the car. As luck happens, Jan manages to just make it onto the ferry.

It’s fun to walk along the main street in Winslow and look into the shops, and we all get books at the Eagle Harbor Bookstore too. We manage to get an early table for steak frites at Marché.

January 15

Liya and Evrim want to visit Pike Place Market before they head back to the East Coast. Jan joins them for a bit of poking around the market. They get piroshkis from Piroshki Piroshki, and learn from a nice lady organzing the queue of customers that Anchorhead Coffee down the block will let people bring their food into the coffeeshop to eat with their drinks.

The three buy cheese, bread, and fruit for a celebratory fondue dinner, which Lyn joins us for as well.

January 19

Bree has exams this week, and they finally wrap up today. She has a school friend, Cat, come over for a two-night sleepover. They cook up a storm, including crème brulée, a Korean rice noodle dish, and a pile of meringues. Cat and Bree have fun torching the brulées.

January 20

Bree and Cat get ready to attend their school’s annual Winter Ball at the Museum of Pop Culture downtown.
