March 1

All three girls are addicted to an iPad/iPhone game called Hay Day. It’s a farming-themed resource management game. The girls are only allowed to play it on weekends, so they’re up bright and early on Saturday morning to harvest their corn, feed their pigs, etc. Angela began helping Bree a bit with her game, and now Angela’s addicted as well.

Our good friends Angel and Leah had twin girls two days ago. We pay a quick visit to see them in the hospital and to meet newborns Avie and Lexie. They’re adorable!

March 2

For her birthday last month, Angela asked for tickets for the whole family to see Monty Python’s Spamalot at the 5th Avenue Theater. The show is pretty enjoyable, and has a better finale than the original movie. Even Bree is not particularly frightened by the experience.

March 7

Jan’s sister Skye gave birth to a baby boy, Leif, last month. She and her husband Jared are doing well. As first-time parents, their lives are adjusting to the arrival of a child — in much the same manner as an object dropped from a great height will adjust to the arrival of the ground. We’re looking forward to meeting Leif soon.

March 8

Being Seattle kids, our girls seem somewhat less put off by rain than we must have been at the same age. Although it’s raining this morning, Bree asks if she can go down the block to see if her friends Audrey and Graham can play. A short while later, we see the three children standing in front of our house, just hanging out and chatting in the pouring rain.

Liya often draws to pass the time in church. Normally she draws flowers, animals, people, landscapes, and so on, but today she draws something pretty different: a diagram of the human heart. After the service, she’s going to recycle it, but Jan asks if he can keep it. He asks her about it, and she happily expounds on various labeled details: the ductus arteriosus, the veins (labeled in both latin and in slang), and a number of other things she recalls from class. She’s quite animated during this impromptu science presentation. We may have a future scientist in the family.

March 23

Spring is here! Liya and Bree spend a long time poking around in the sunny backyard, playing with moss and bark, making flower wreaths, and generally having a great time.

March 24

Jan drops the girls off at school each morning. Bree likes it when Jan parks the car (instead of going through the drive-through drop off) and walks her into class. Jan does this with her once a week on a day she picks. When she gets to class, she: turns over her name card to show she’s there, hangs up her coat and backpack, and washes her hands. Before the class gets going, the kids have free choice time. Bree’s favorite activity, by far, is the Invention Center where she assembles paper and other materials to create collages, little dioramas, etc.

March 30

Rite of Spring: We make a trip to see the cherry blossoms in bloom on the University of Washington campus.

March 30

Anya and Liya have fun climbing the cherry trees.
